With maybay you'll find the perfect beach according to weather conditions

@maybay app | 2020 - Present
Project Overview
maybay offers a ranking of the best beaches according to the confirmation of the coasts and weather conditions. Matching weather forecast and geomorphological data, this app allows spotting the perfect shore right now or in the next few days. With maybay hyper-local results, you can fully enjoy your vacation at any time, unexpectedly finding a sheltered beach and calm sea even on the wind.
My Contributions
I’ve been in charge of designing the User Experience and the Brand Identity, along with a small team of two developers lead by Dario Noucandi and a chemist passionate about sailing.

How might we improve the user's beach experience?

Problem to solve
The problem we wanted to solve is the risk of finding yourself on a beach in conditions that are not entirely comfortable. The wind may create dangerous waves and eddies, making the whole experience not pleasant.
The solution
The app crosses meteorological data relating to wind, temperature, and wave motion with an algorithm that's analyze the coast morphology. By detecting the user's position, maybay reports the closest beaches and the relative score obtained based on these indicators.

How I designed the user experience

Product Set-Up
The first step was to jot down all the features we wanted to offer to our users. After this first mapping, we categorized them into must-have and nice to have. In this way, we understood which features would make up our MVP and which ones could come later on.
Sketching
I started sharing my ideas by hand drawing the main screens, keeping the process as low-fi as possible at its early stage. It allowed us to deepen the definition of the main functions quickly without focusing on distracting details.
UX/UI Design
After the hand-sketched user flow, I created a mood board that would help us understand the look and feel we wanted for the app. After choosing one of the three home page proposals, I started reworking the flows through high-fidelity mockups.
Branding
The name
We first started by brainstorming about concepts concerning beach, choice, ranking, and so on. After a few clumsy attempts (such as Which Beach, H-beach, or Pick a beach), we realize that we were stuck.

With the help of Edoardo Rubatto, we created a pun that combines:
- the mayday emergency procedure word,
- the concept of choice and possibility of may word,
- the word bay, synonyms for the beach.

The logo
Since maybay derives from mayday, I decide to play with the SOS morse code visually.
And so the . . . - - - . . . morse signal became our beloved sky, sea, and beach.
